Assistant Head Gardener

We're seeking a talented Assistant Head Gardener to help take care of our historically important gardens and grounds; Our 700 year old gardens include a C17th 11 acre walled garden laid out in ‘rooms’  surrounded by yew hedges, Elizabethan formal lawns and parterres, informal meadow style planting, historic parkland, watercourses and ponds.


The Assistant Head Gardener will work under the direction of our Head Gardener and will assist him in ensuring the historic gardens of Penshurst Place are kept to a high standard.


We are looking for a horticulturist who has a horticultural qualification or similar experience at level 3 and PA1/PA6 spraying licence. This role would suit a candidate who is looking to looking to further their career by developing their horticultural and staff management skills.


It is important that the candidate is keen and enthusiastic about gardening and willing to learn and develop their skills. He/she should have good general plant knowledge and horticultural ability as well as being comfortable working around the general public.


Areas of responsibility include deputising in the Head Gardener’s absence, the supervision of staff and apprentice, general gardening duties suck as mowing and hedge trimming, assisting in maintaining a children’s play area and assisting in the management of the greenhouse and the supply of house plants.


HOURS – Generally 39 hours per week, Mon to Fri occasional weekend duties

HOLIDAYS – 28 days per year plus Bank Holidays

SALARY - Dependent on experience

Catering & Events Staff


Kudos, the new partner caterers at Penshurst Place & Gardens, are seeking enthusiastic, experienced, and hands-on staff to join their team. Hours available will vary weekly, depending on booked events, with the busy season generally running from April – October.


Each role will include a variety of ‘front of house’ duties including:


  • Food and drinks service (barista experience advantageous but not essential)
  • Cash handling
  • Waiting on tables
  • Clearing tables and general cleaning
  • Maintaining a high standard of hygiene in all service areas
  • Some light furniture moving


The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate:


  • A willingness to help in all areas
  • Friendly customer service;
  • Experience in hospitality/events industry (advantageous but not essential)
  • Attention to detail
  • good timekeeping skills
  • A level of comfort or experience with tills and cashing up
  • Attainment of Level 2 Food and Hygiene Safety (advantageous but not essential)


Candidates must also be able to work late at night and weekends for certain events and own transport is essential, due to remote location and potential unsociable hours.
