Events for July 2022

Alphra Behn Statue Tour

4th Jul - 5th Jul from 11.30am - 3.30pm

Aphra Behn, born Aphra Johnson in 1640, was the first professional woman of literature and drama in the English language. She was one of the most prolific playwrights of her generation, daring to earn a living 'by the pen' in a time where for a woman to do so was considered indecent.

On 4th & 5th July, Penshurst Place will host 4 bronze statues of this incredible writer which will be on display in our Baron's Hall. From these four, one will be chosen as winner this Autumn and commissioned as a life-and-a-quarter size bronze statue for the Canterbury Commemoration Society.

Please note, an upgrade to a House and Gardens ticket is required to see the statues.
